Great KATETHONG reaction to eliminate the European Champion

Line KJAERSFELDT (no. 19, Denmark), despite leading in every set, was unable to counter the comeback of Thailand's Supanida KATETHONG (No. 11). A close match that sees the number 3 of Thailand Women Single advance to the round of 16: 14/21 22/20 21/19. There, she will face Akane YAMAGUCHI (no.5, Japan).

KJAERSFELDT, the first to find the right pace

Before the match, we could imagine a balanced encounter between two players in the world's top 20. On one side, the 2025 European Champion Line KJAERSFELDT (no. 19, Denmark) and on the other, the winner of the 2024 Thailand Open (Super 500), Supanida KATETHONG (no. 11, Thailand). 1/1 in the head-to-head confrontation, who will take the advantage of the head-to-head and, above all, who will advance to the round of 16?

The match begins with both players searching for their bearings, with unforced errors on both sides. In this game, it was the European Champion who managed to be more consistent and extend the lead. On a service error from KATETHONG, symptomatic of her early match, the Dane took the set : 21/14.

KATETHONG, back from the abysses

Following the first set momentum, Line KJAERSFELDT dominates. Sharp as usual from the baseline but also from the front of the court, she is ahead 11/6. But the machine stalls, giving hope to an opponent. More combative, the number 3 of Thailand Women Single offered herself a deciding game : 22/20.

In the final game, it is once again the Dane who takes the lead: 11/9. But KATETHONG, who is not giving up, scores 6 points in a row from the start: 15/11. This does not stop the Dane from doing the same (15/15). The final sprint is launched. But as in the second set, it is KATETHONG who takes the advantage in the money-time to earn herself a place in the round of 16 : 14/21 22/20 21/19.

In the mixed zone, she explains her comeback in the second set: “I just started really to play, enjoying myself and playing point by point [...] It's always a pleasure to play in Paris in the Olympic stadium, there are so many fans here.”

In the round of 16 she will face Akane YAMAGUCHI (no.5 Japan), who had a tough fight against the South Korean KIM Ga Eun (n°17): 21/19 21/19.
